Hi all. I'd just like to let all of you know that, courtesy of PCH/Bill Woodcock, the UIXP route servers have been deployed at the UIXP. Members from CFI, Wilken Afsat, One2Net, ISPKenya [Brian Longwe] and myself were present to witness this event.
The route servers are basically high performance and fairly modular 1760 Cisco Routers, with pretty fast processors and lots of RAM. The route servers will allow for fast and easy deployment of member routers at the UIXP, to quickly bring up peering sessions and sharing of routes. They will also lower the amount of hardware complexity required to peer at the exchange, since a member can simply decided to peer with the route servers ONLY, and get all routes being advertised at the exchange. The route servers will also minimise on the amount of initial configuration required to start exchanging prefixes. In addition, PCH/Bill also installed a 2950 FastEthernet Cisco Switch, which in addition to moving packets between the PCH gear, can also double as a backup if the primary exchange switch were to ever fail. I believe this is a big step toward the success of the UIXP. Bill could very kindly have a copy of one of the photographs he took, while at the exchange :-). I encourage the rest of you members to get your hook-up to the exchange as soon as possible. Once again, any assistance I, or any other member of the exchange can give, is readily available. Thanks. Regards, Mark Tinka - CCNA Network Engineer, Africa Online Uganda
