Interesting how you say, competitive.

In the industry, standards push competition. Imagine what the world would have been like if each vendor had their own version of OSI. Microsoft seems to think its software should have its own standards; look at SNMP and look at Microsoft's SNMP; look at the default mode for PASSIVE FTP in all UNIX/Linux software and still unsupported in Microsoft clients, except IE [which is generally another story, but Netscape solved that problem]; look at Microsoft Outlook, and it's inability to properly handle MIME attachments of type "message/RFC 822" - what is the standard for then, if Outlook has NEVER been able to handle it properly. Eudora is tons and tons better at this than Outlook, or should I say [LookOut]. I only find myself using Outlook for historical reasons, but that is short-lived!

You can't bite the hand that feeds you, but Mircrosoft has improved the computing world, and ruined it at the same time. For those of us on this list, Microsoft is something we only have to endure because of our clients. Alot of the software installed on Microsoft can look pretty, but the cost of the inherent security, or lack thereof, and overall long-term performance is not worth forgetting.

So, I am going to go with the software vendor, who will put his mail reader [PINE, MUTT, MAIL] out there for the whole world to see, get criticised based on the RFC's or standards written, and actually get to use software that does what it's supposed to do. For the price [0/=], you are getting a much better deal with open source, than you would with spending money on a system that is Plug-and-Pray!

Microsoft is plagued with doing so many things its way, and not allowing for software improvement. Until they can figure that out, I will always run Exim on my mail gateway. It costs 1000% less than Exchange, won't break, is secure and does the job. It may not be as fancy, but all I need to do is route mail.

The M$ guy is absolutely right! If software is to remain an industry then it has to operate like all other industries - NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR PRODUCT FOR FREE. Let us not forget that source code is to this industry what goods are to other industries.

And in biz terms I cannot see any of you here telling your clients or bosses for that matter how to do the work you do, for your knowledge is the product you sell in the service industry! If you did you would render youtself irrelevant!

The best thing we need to do is negotiate better sales terms of these software products! And this comes through competetion in the traditional industries. I can imagine the guys developing software even on this list have a similar opinion! =:)

If the so called OSS advocates had competetive products on the market they would on the other side of the fence!!!! swell!!!
thnx.

But the question is, the secret of success to who? The user, or the software
vendor?
