Microsoft has no right to decide for the industry what is good or bad for
it. If they feel that their software is soo good and that they want to
keep shut thats OK, let them be but to try and force others to do their
bidding is absolutely wrong. As an example look at the auto industry.
Wouldn't Mercedes sell you a car with the hood tightly shut and sealed,
with all the bolts welded shut with some straneg chemical that can only be
opened by a Mercedes dealer. But no they sell you a car that can be
modified and completely retuned by renown shops like AMG.
And look who is talking about business sense... remember a company called
Netscape that used to sell a browser (the worlds best at the time), who
run them out of business. Isn't it the same Microsoft that started giving
away its internet explorer free just so that it could muscle Netscape out
of the way. Why is it at that time that they did not think about the
so-called biz terms?
So gentlemen let Microsoft shut their traps and let open source be. If it
wasn't for the gaining popularity of open software do you think Microsoft
would have made an effort to improve windows security? no... and we all
know that with the kind of financial muscle they have the only way to
unseat or compete favorably with them is to come up with a product that
is significantly cheaper than theirs and much better at that. And how else
would you achieve this objective without getting thousands of volunteers
to work on your product other than through open source.
And yes some of the OSS advocates actually do sell supported products that
they create. (does sendmail switch ring a bell to you?)

The M$ guy is absolutely right! If software is to remain an industry then
it has to operate like all other industries - NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR PRODUCT
FOR FREE. Let us not forget that source code is to this industry what
goods are to other industries.
And in biz terms I cannot see any of you here telling your clients or
bosses for that matter how to do the work you do, for your knowledge is
the product you sell in the service industry! If you did you would render
youtself irrelevant!
The best thing we need to do is negotiate better sales terms of these
software products! And this comes through competetion in the traditional
industries. I can imagine the guys developing software even on this list
have a similar opinion! =:)
If the so called OSS advocates had competetive products on the market they
would on the other side of the fence!!!! swell!!!
thnx.

But the question is, the secret of success to who? The user, or the
software
vendor?
