Just doing a quick install, debian 3 and ubuntu have this problem - mambo installations on redhat, suse, fedora and freebsd (on mac osx jaguar and tiger) dont have this problem

What version of debian is the provider offering. AFAIK, debian 3.1 (Sarge) is
compatible with Mambo. I think, that the previous version was not compatible
with Mambo.
In addition, if he can get the versions of the following installed on the
providers server it could help in finding the solution: PHP, MySQL, and
Apache.
