While I am almost entirely cured of iPhone lust (thanks to the hype) even before I actually see/touch one, I'd say most of these reviewers are missing the point. Just as they did when OSX first came out in 2000-ish (and lacked decent printing support, browser, windows networking, etc) or the iPod. Look where OSX is today (esp. compared with Vista) and you'll see that you need to get past such reviews (caused by the rather low memory span of your average tech journalist) to see where this is going.

1. iPhone designers get it: It's the software, stupid. The other phone manufacturers don't. They are still stuck in H/W mode. 2. iPhone designers get it: Less is often more. The others a busy pushing feature lists. But our sensory inputs are already over-loaded! 3. iPhone designers get it: It's the Internet, stupid. Tie the device (a software device) to the Internet, and you can deliver enhancements easily and regularly.

Call quality? Pah! Every kid knows how to do call quality in software. Apple certainly does, as iChat demonstrates. They'll fix it. 3G? Dead already. And so on. These features you speak of are too easy to implement! They'll fix them in no time.

Lets talk about hard stuff: 7hrs video playback on a handheld device with a colour screen. Find me another consumer device of the same size/weight that does this (iPhone does), and I'll stop being impressed. I could go on.

In short(!) what is gratifying is that somebody has had the guts to walk into the room and tell everybody they not worth their paychecks! Takes guts and real leadership to do that effectively. And It's good for all present. Cue feverish R&D from Nokia/LG/Samsung/ Motorolla!

The i-phone is really a "fashion" thing.

most reviewers note the following cons:

- no 3G/HSDPA
- very poor call quality
- no stereo bluetooth
- no music management (apart from using a computer & sync)
- no FM radio
- integrated email client lacks many features.
- web browser not as stable as hyped (crashes a lot
apparently, but this can be fixed with an update)

there are far better phones for the same cost:

+ Nokia E90
+ Nokia E61i
+ Sony Ericsson P1i
+ Sony Ericsson W960
+ Samsung Blackjack
+ Motorola Q9
