For give me if am wrong but i think i have experienced it be4 take a look
cut -d: -f1 < /etc/passwd | sort | xargs echo -n
and
cut -d: -f1 < /etc/passwd | sort | xargs echo
If xargs was called once for each line you would have a vertical line
but both end up with horizontal listing.
