Maybe something behind the @ sign?

Are you by any chance using smeserver? I think for historical reasons 
smeserver is storing all its data under the user e-smith. (as 
in /home/e-smith

I would think that creating an email account for this exact user (what a 
coinsidence!) would be impossible on smeserver.
