I've been trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on one of my hard disks but got an error which showed the following on my screen:

(initranfs) [ 65.612059] ata 3.00 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 65.612119] ata 3.00 cmd c8/00:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag0 dma4096in ....and this kept going on and on and eventually stops and nothing happens any more.

I had Suse 10.2 installed without problems and also Kubuntu 6.06 didn't cause any problem. The Ubuntu 8.10 disk I have installed on an other computer without any problems.

I checked on the internet and found quite a number of pages indicating that there are several bugs that cause this or similar errors. Some of these pages just state problems but no solutions, some are too technical which I don't understand and from some pages I've been trying the suggested solutions but up to now nothing worked, e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/202938 changing my "BIOS and set the SATA mode from IDE to RAID"

Does someone know a solution or can guide me to solve this.

Peter
