Simon,

It's a clone machine. I checked the hard disks:
1) HD0 or hda has windows installed. It's the primary master and the BIOS and a jumper on "Master on Slave off" 2) HD1 or hdb has linux installed. It's the primary slave in the BIOS and it has no jumper.

Peter,

Is this a clone or branded machine? I have problems sometimes if the hard disk is set to cable select or not master slave properly.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on one of my hard disks but got an error which showed the following on my screen:

(initranfs) [ 65.612059] ata 3.00 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 65.612119] ata 3.00 cmd c8/00:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag0 dma4096in ....and this kept going on and on and eventually stops and nothing happens any more.

I had Suse 10.2 installed without problems and also Kubuntu 6.06 didn't cause any problem. The Ubuntu 8.10 disk I have installed on an other computer without any problems.

I checked on the internet and found quite a number of pages indicating that there are several bugs that cause this or similar errors. Some of these pages just state problems but no solutions, some are too technical which I don't understand and from some pages I've been trying the suggested solutions but up to now nothing worked, e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/202938 changing my "BIOS and set the SATA mode from IDE to RAID"

Does someone know a solution or can guide me to solve this.

Peter
