Thank you.
One more test: It doesn't boot the 64-bit kernel by default from
what I've read. You need to boot holding down certain keys (can't
remember). Can you try that and see how that performs.

So some initial feedback (clean install, not upgrade):
a) The installation claims to take 30 minutes (it felt more
like 45 minutes, though).
b) The install required about 11GB of disk space, if you
include X11, XCode, Printer drivers and all that good
stuff. Much more than I expected (the printer drivers
need about 1GB on their own - without all that
"goodness", the install needed about 8GB, still more than
I expected).
c) It does boot and shutdown much quicker, but I usually run
my box for about a month without shutting down, so time
will tell as applications are more resident in RAM over
time.
d) The fan seems to work less, but then again my platform
isn't that quick (2007 MacBook, 13" White model, 2GB
DRAM, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). We'll see how that holds
up as I continue to load Firefox and VMware, the two
applications that really eat up my resources.
e) All my applications seem to run. The only one I haven't
yet installed is Sophos, but that's for other reasons.
Will be doing that in a couple of days.
f) You get a couple of complaints about "OS unsupported"
from applications that haven't yet been ported to 10.6,
but they still install and run fine, e.g., Adobe's
Shockwave.
g) Speaking of Adobe, Reader, Flash and Shockwave don't have
official support for 10.6, but they all run. The same can
be said for a ton of other applications, e.g., Machacha,
Growl, e.t.c.
h) Some applications require Rosetta, e.g., Chmox. Rosetta
is either on the DVD or online (10.6 automatically
downloaded the online copy, it's small, about 2MB).
i) Expose has been improved too, seems less cluttered.
j) Not sure if I can say it's noticeably quicker (aside from
boot-up and shutdown), but then again, I spend half of my
time in KMail (VMware) and the other in Firefox and
iTerm.
k) 'top' is much more verbose!
l) MacPorts seems to integrate fine - a friend was telling
me he found it unstable. I only need 'wget' :-).
m) I do have about 12GB more space than when I re-installed.
On the other hand, I didn't dump my Time Machine backup,
I left out a few things, e.g., /Library, e.t.c. But, I do
have all my applications again, so perhaps there is a
space savings after all.
n) I like the fact that the system now tells you if the
battery is healthy, in addition to giving you some power.
o) Everything else is gravy for me :-).
Cheers,
Mark.
