I've sampled the HTC Hero here in KL. It has a slightly
modified version of pre-2.0 Android, but it looks really
cool, the Sense UI is smooth (not yet as good as the iPhone,
though), and is really interesting all around - perhaps the
most interesting phone, for me, in the last couple of years:

The issue with the Hero is that the Sense UI is a little
sluggish, despite the rather quick Qualcomm 528MHz
processor, especially if you're running some applications
with others in the background. Folks are chalking it down to
an unoptimized Android, that could be fixed in later code
(considering the iPhone 3G has a 412MHz ARM11 processor).
There's simply too much stuff happening in the background
even when you aren't doing anything. If HTC can clean that
code, the Hero will be even cooler than it is now.
Definitely a phone I think I'll be taking.

One issue with Android outside the States (well, in
Malaysia, anyway) is that with Market, some applications
(including the free ones) are not available. Market checks
whether your phone is registered to a U.S. wireless
provider. If not, you only get a handful of "international"
applications, none of the paid ones, and a measly offering
of many of the free ones.

But, as always, there's a fix. One can flash their phone
with code that allows them to install another application
which enables the masquerading of a wireless service
provider, i.e., you can tell Market, through this
application, that my phone is actually registered to Sprint,
for instance :-).

Cheers,

Mark.
