Hi Joseph,

the Asterisk channel represents a voice path. In order to initiate a phone call the Asterisk usually needs 2 voice paths (channels). One path from the phone to the Asterisk PBX and the second channel to the respective gateway/PSTN termination.

SIP Phone == (1 channel) ==> Asterisk PBX == (1 channel) ==> PSTN trunk (analogue/E1/digital/Skype/.........)

Conclusion, in most of the cases the channels are twice the amount of the actual calls, unless someone calls his voicemail.

Regards,
Rocco

Guys (and Gals :) ),

I have a quick asterisk question.

What is the relationship between total calls and total channels in
asterisk? Should the 2 values be equal?

Cheers,

Joseph
