An interesting comment from the link you posted.

"I feel Robert Leitao (aka DawnTreader) is closer to the real reason. Steve Jobs feels betrayed by Adobe who after cutting their teeth on Apple neglected the Apple platform for a larger PC market. As a result, the Mac versions of the same products came out later, if at all, after released on the PC platform. Adobe was probably thinking the Mac would die anyway, looking at the buggy Mac version of Flash. Now that the Mac presents a significant new large segment of the market, its payback time for their betrayal. A bit similar treatment to Google actually.

I beg to disagree. Indeed, I think this debate is healthy in a way.

While SJ has a right do whatever he wants to make more money, it is hypocritical of him to support openness only when it suits him. His defense on why they don't use flash on their products should have stuck to the technical details, he shouldn't have made any reference to openness to quote "Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open."

Perhaps more interesting was his admission that closed systems leave you at the mercy of the owner:

"If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers."

Hello Mr SJ if you are so averse to being at the mercy of others what about the people who buy your products whose use of these products is restricted to only the features you choose to support at that time, how different is this?

If it makes technical and business sense for them to reject Flash on their products so be it, let him turn away those clients who need Flash for now, what he shouldn't do is to try to justify it in the court of public opinion. Perhaps to better understand his motivation in this debate please read:

Oh my! That Ass Technica writer fails to win by volume! SJ will champion what best brings cash into his account. If that promotes the free/open religion, then that is purely accidental even if it's good. This guy gets it: http://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2010/04/29/jobs_on_flash/#c_752789
