you could also have tried using the network manager.
It comes with opensuse 11.2
Set it through yast as your default network manager as opossed nto using ifup.

Do this and any time you want to connect any usb modem from the list of 
currently availabe service providers ie, orange, zain, warid etc
all it does is display a mobile phone icon on the taskbar to show that it has 
seen the modem.

Set the phone number to the dialing number used on that network "usually *9#"
set the apn of that network.

and then, have a lot of fun.
