While I agree that unilaterally taking a decision to ban a user is not right, I think that any acceptable use policy would still have been violated by Cavin, not once, not twice but several times over since he joined the list. So if we are talking about a policy that cautions users and then takes appropriate action after a while it would come to the same thing - Cavin would have been banned by now!

As to the idea that we should ignore him, it boils down to the same thing, except that one does not have to even read emails from him. If he wants to keep up with whats going in on the lug there are public archives of the mailing list. Whenever he decides that he wants to have debates without resorting to below the belt attacks on personalities rather than sticking to the issues, then he can be reinstated.

And if banning happens by consensus but I vote to ban him.

Paul,

The Gospel you preach is true, but I beg to differ. Personal attacks and
racist innuendo the kind Cavin spews should not be tolerated because
"Everybody knows he is intellectually challenged", It encourages him to
continue posting. Opening, reading then ignoring his emails is too much
work, considering the potential pitfalls of creating a "Delete * where
name = Cavin" rule.

I suggest he is left on the forum for all Kids to see growing tall and
breaking your voice doesn't mean your an adult, albeit a time out for
him would be ideal, though seeing as he is generating new email handles
and spamming us, a more draconian approach should suffice.

Cheers

But that's precisely the point. You know EXACTLY how Cavin will
react. And yet you rise. Why? Just ignore him says I. In the years
that LUG existed, before you joined, I do not recall anyone being
banned. Or threatened with a ban. I almost feel like reaching for
    that biblical phrase*.
The negative influences are a) provoking the man when you know what
he is like and b) Rising when he acts true to character. Ignore him.
You ignore posts that you find uninformative/unimportant, why not his?
