Instead of: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usr
  You want: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/

I reread the instructions on that page, and I did see a reference to
/mnt/user/ in step 13.

    13. Unmount the LiveCD's /usr directory:
        sudo umount /mnt/usr

But that's actually a mistake in the instructions.  Ignore step 13.  And
anyway, step 13 is after you're all finished and want to reboot.
