I believe they are saying that the new OS will have improved support for UEFI, not a replacement. Besides Linux so far trumps even Windows in terms of being able to work on any box. For your laptop, it sounds like Ubuntu screwed up the fan settings. Which happens. Actually even the bog standard setup of Mac OS X on the Macbook Pros seems to have wrong settings for the fan, which makes the laptop run hot -- you need to use an app to ramp up the speed of the fan to keep the animal cool.
