Dear Paul, They said the same thing about the introduction of the PC. It would put thousands of people out of a job.
Instead, it created more. Anything that makes you more efficient, in general, is good for the economy, thus good for you and me and any sysop. (Though sysops might be the next COBOL programmers :-) reinier > Against better judgement: Here is what we might call a more measured view http://www.economist.com/node/21523256 > On Amazon and outsourcing, I colleague was just showing me his Amazon EC2 account, and how they setup and and scale their (Linux) server instances. These are mostly LAMP boxes. If I were a low-level Linux sys admin, this brave new world should scare me. I admit I used to hear "marketing" whenever somebody said "cloud", but this Amazon thing is impressive for its ease of use. Indeed same guy told me of a chap who is a VP in charge of IT at a massive financial institution. The guy tells him how they used to have hundreds of sys admins, and are now down to five, thanks to this sort of thing. So, not something to be sniffed at. > > P. > > > On Jul 25, 2011, at 17:52, Cavin Aaron wrote: > > > Borders, > > > > the retail book store giant is finally closing shop, and its fall can be attributed to several factors, > > top of the list is I.T. > > > > Outsourcing their web business to Amazon, was a disastrous move, > > The company was losing over $20 m per year on the site, but outsourcing doesnt produce miracles > > > > > > > > RIP: Amy Winehouse > > _______________________________________________ > > The Uganda Linux User Group: http://linux.or.ug > > > > Send messages to this mailing list by addressing e-mails to: [email protected] > > Mailing list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ > > Mailing list settings: http://kym.net/mailman/listinfo/lug > > To unsubscribe: http://kym.net/mailman/options/lug > > > > The Uganda LUG mailing list is generously hosted by INFOCOM: http://www.infocom.co.ug/ > > > > The above comments and data are owned by whoever posted them (including attachments if any).
