Richard,

Your mindset is JUST PERFECT to learn. You need to look up two books namely
SAG and NAG or more
popularly known as "The Linux System Administrators Guide" and "The Linux
Network Administrators Guide".

I don't know if they still write those books but they formed what we called
the, "Linux Users Bible" back in my day.
Then you need to familiarise yourself with using consoles and the concept of
daemons.

Learn about the Linux kernel and what you get, "out of the box" then what
you need to add to achieve what you want.
these days Linux installs a lot of stuff automagically so you sometimes
windup with a box that has stuff you don't need.
like TOUGH CONSOLE GAMES and some weird thing called lynx (awesome!).
Anyway, the first terminal command you should
learn is "man". Later you should look up "apropos".

I will be quite frank with you. Ubuntu intimidates and bores me cause I have
never got the hang of graphical Linux. If you find
a good book, you can go on and work without learning console Linux. Let me
tell you a little secret though, I compiled all the popular
Linux commands to run on windows cause typing "ls" is not only faster than
"dir" but more satisfying. And yes, when things get tough
in windows, I open a command prompt and use a console.

I hope you are inspired, encouraged and intrigued to study this wonderful
"lifestyle" called Linux. Checkout pine. Only ninjas use Vi so

Be like me, and use Pico. J may the force be with you.

Jake

Ps. If you install only one thing, let it be fortune!! Make the command,
"fortune -a" a cron job. It will brighten your day IMMENSELY!!

Hello Harry,

I have an out of scratch knowledge in Ubuntu, SUSE and Red hat, and I am
confident that I can interact and oparate with the mentioned kind of linux.
I am now looking forward to developing core understanding in administration
of LINUX servers and security and is upon that that I made that call.

Thanks
