Flashing a new mod wont necessarily unlock the phone. I had a droid2 global
phone and flashed cyanogen onto it thinking it would be unlockable. But
alas to my dismay the phone firmware and radio firmware are 2 different
things. I ended up calling verizon with my Imei # and they gave me the
unlock code.

If you want to go the rooting route ... b prepared to hack the phone radio
in addition to the phone OS
