Just to expand on the burn speed issue: There is more to it than that.
Simply put, faster speed means more blur. More blur means the grooves are
less precisely defined on the optical disc. This can be seen in an electron
microscope. What this means is that even if the burning session is a
success, there is a chance that certain readers (usually, but not always,
lower quality ones) will have problems reading the disc, even when it works
fine in other readers. So, yeah, it is certainly better to burn discs at a
lower speed, especially if you plan on using them in readers with which you
are not familiar. On the other hand, if you have tried and know that all
readers in your home can read discs burned with your laptop at the fastest
setting, and you are burning something which you plan on using only at
home, there's no point not to burn at a higher speed.
