You don't need a custom distro. Just run opensuse 12.2 (down to 11.4) and install the latest kernel and samba from the opensuse build repositories. Kernel here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/standard/ Samba here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/samba:/TESTING/openSUSE_12.2/
There are also Samba4 packages for Fedora, Mandriva, RHEL, SLES, all in the parent of the latter directory. I don't routinely praise the Opensuse Build Service for nothing.
