Paul,

For Microsoft Office is now a bigger cash cow than Windows, and with
tablets/smartphones eating PCs for lunch plus Google Docs now stable and
growing, M$FT has to follow the money for its office franchise hence the
push for Office 365 (browser based) and Linux.

Its just about the Office money . not Linux love. Remember since Hyper-V
support is built into the Linux Kernel (with Microsoft support) plus Mono
for .NET this may be easier than a complete rewrite.

A proper case of adapt or die

I think hell must freeze over first. Can't imagine why they'd want to even
the playing field by letting out Office for Linux. Doesn't seem to rhyme
with how they operate. What with this

They should embrace torrents first.

It is about time m$ cared more about product than ecosystem.
This was inevitable. The new familiar but now touch friendly office will
make a nice addition to android though linux desktop versions are another
story.
They need to first embrace OSS and not just use it.
