I guess I've been spoilt with always having an Internet connection, both at
home and at school. Dial-up of course, but sometimes I would accompany my
mother to work, and then I had their corporate ISDN at my disposal. 128
kbps! Warp speed back then :)

I think most default environments are deliberately bland. It should be
bearable to use, but it should also not be stunning, so as actively to
encourage some customisation.
