Dear Ed and all, Not so long ago there was discussion on the LuteNet over what pieces existed for lute based on the La Folia theme. The current discussion involving Ponce seems interesting given that this work is probably the most significant work he wrote for the classical guitar. Many of the variations do work on lute - Baroque lute, but like most of his work, very difficult music - both for the player and the listener. I've always considered this work a good prototype for composers to consider composition in this genre - not just for the guitar, but also for the lute. Of course idiomatically it is closer to the guitar then the lute, but then it is debatable with it was conceived on a guitar, probably piano.
