Dear Tom, you need to give more information. What kind of strings are on your
lute? PVF, Nylon, gut, nylgut? What's the tension on the strings? If it's
nylgut count on anything between one second and a several months. If it's gut
count it's one second OR anything between a week and a month for the top
string (with gut you feel and see the string getting to its end if it didn't
break rightaway), the others will last (much) more, depending on tension. My
experience with pvf is at least several months to years and I had only to
replace topstrings a few times a year.
Perhaps the tension is a little bit high for your d string. Calculate it if
you know diameter and stringlength (Arto has an online stringcalculator, or
use basic physics formula's). Check for sharp edges, although if it last 6
months I would not complain... (I need to replace my d-strings (gut) within
the coming 2 weeks and they are just 3 weeks old!)
