Bill, I don't think your question about the photos vs. the actual incidents carries much weight. The world was not really stirred against the Holocaust until photos and newsreels were taken by Allied forces liberating the camps. It was known for years before that the Nazis were moving trainloads of Jews into those camps, but no one really grasped the horror of what was happening there. And I don't think anyone today would say that the actions committed in the camps were not atrocities. Images are powerful.
