Okay, I'll start off. The number one tip I would give is to make sure 
the string is not rubbing against the inside of the pegbox. This is 
easy to overlook as you are winding a slack string up. Each wind can 
bring it closer to the edge. I often pull the peg out a bit as I'm 
winding a string on to make sure the winds are right up against each 
other. The peg will move easier and there is less chance of the 
string unraveling if it doesn't touch.

I'll leave it to others to talk about nut grooves and lubrication.
