Thanks to all who tried to help (in vain). I finally got some advice from Microsoft, and they said that no driver would load properly because there are some .vxd files missing from the operating system, and the only solution is finding a Windows 98 CD appropriate for a 5 year old Toshiba somewhere (MSoft doesn't sell 98 anymore) and reload the goddamned thing........
