Here is a replacement for missing measure numbers. In fact, I use this
system even when the measure numbers are there -- it is faster and locates
measures more reliably.
( lineNumber , measureNumberOnThatLine )
with the convention that a minus sign means "count from the end".
For example:
1 , 1 first line's first measure
1 , -1 first line's last measure
2 , -2 second line's penultimate measure
-1 , -1 last line's last measure
-3 , -5 go to end of 3rd line and count 5 measures back
Multipage pieces could be accomodated with a prepended page number.
The system does not, of course, allow inter-edition references, since line
breaks and page breaks will be different.
