BTW David and all, I just noticed that on your web site you rounded the 1/6 synt. c. deviation of 1,63 cent to 2 cent, which happens to be the same as the rounded 1.96 of Silbermann's 1/6 pyth. c.. So maybe we're not talking about the same temperament here, I should have given the other figures as well... Of course it doesn't make a big difference with one fifth only, but it certainly adds up with the other fifths. I found the excel spreadsheets of Claudio di Veroli from his website to be very helpful for my mathematically challenged mind, and they give the following figures for 1/6 synt.c.: +/- 1,63 3,26 4,89 6,52 8,15 9,78 as opposed to 1/6 pyth.c. aka 2/11 synt.c. aka "Silbermann" (if I understood it right), which has deviations of: +/- 1,96 3,91 5,87 7,82 9,78 11,73 If you haven't already stopped reading here you might be interested in the other offsets as well, they are: for 1/5 synt. c.: +/- 2,35 4,69 7,04 9,39 11,73 14,08 for 2/9 synt.c.: +/- 2,82 5,65 8,47 11,30 14,12 16,95 for 1/4 synt.c.: +/- 3,42 6,84 10,26 13,69 17,11 20,53 My impression is that 2/11 synt.c. or "Silbermann" give the most exact results on lutes, as all figures can be slightly rounded in the same direction to 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Any mistakes in the above are of course my own and I would be happy to be corrected. :-) Best regards, Stephan -- Erstellt mit Operas revolutionrem E-Mail-Modul: http://www.opera.com/m2/ To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
