Not for me. I like HIP efforts at old music as well as modern transcription/performance of old music on currently active instruments. HIP simply offers one more facet of music for me to enjoy, and I do enjoy it very sincerely. I have to approach HIP for the simple enjoyment of it because there simply is no way to know what the music actually sounded like in the hands of da Milano, Dowland, Weiss, Corbetta, Giuliani, etc. For all the very best educated guesses and most refined and beautiful efforts at HIP, there will always be a vast element of speculation. Also, no ear that has ingested Prokofiev, Metallica, Britten, Glass, etc. can hear the then-daring chromaticism in M. Galilei, e.g., and hear it as new and daring; the original intended effect is wholly gone.
