alboka is a new one on me, thanks all.  Corun, I would have thought the
depiction of that half-circle too stiff to be anything fabric, my first
thought was some kind of bellows.

a double-clarinet?  perhaps you meant the chalemaux? (predecessor of the
clarinet).  I thought proper clarinets begin mid 1600's with certain
improvements making it possible to bridge the gap between the fundamental
and the overblown registers.
