Thanks for the input -- I hope I didn't sound like I begrudge luthiers what they charge for their instruments (because I don't); I was just curious as to what the raw material expenses are. I work in a knowledge industry where my raw material expenses are close to zero; so if the final price had to be determined by the cost of the raw materials, I would be in big trouble!
