Dear Omer, Welcome to a great topic --strings-- and one we often stretch to great lengths.
A general rule of thumb is to add about 10 to 15 cms to your string length (60 cms?) to the outside courses (being so close to the nut) and maybe a little more on the strings in the middle (especially 10-c instruments). If you buy 180 cm lengths, a cut in half should do you. And buy a couple of extra top course strings --just in case. When you gain some confidence at tying and estimating you can start tricks like tying leaders. good luck, Sean On Apr 29, 2007, at 9:42 AM, Omer katzir wrote: > for the strings, dont get weird thoughts... > i know i need to buy 0.54 string. but i dont know if the length > matters here... > its my first time with lute strings, still dont know what and how to > order. > > going to order from http://www.music-strings.de > do i have to order each string twice? or what... > here's what i need: > its a 7 course renaissance lute in G 440hz > > 1st g - 0.42 > 2nd d - 0.54 > 3rd a - 0.68 > 4th f - 0.85 > 5th c 1.04 > 6th G 1.40 & octave 0.73 > 7th D 1.85 & Octave 0.88 > > and...that's it :-) > > > > To get on or off this list see list information at > http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
