Stepen, In the front of her book, on f.lv in 16 16, inscribed:
Jane Pickeringe owe this Booke 1616 In the Boethius edition, Robert Spencer gives an introductory study, and he states in the 1877 British Museum "Catalogue of Additions 1854-1857" identified her thus: "A daughter of Sir John Puckering (or Pickering), Lord Keeper, married Adam Newton, tutor to Henry Prince of Whales". The facts are incorrect, as Sir Adam Newton in 1605 married "not Jane, But Katherine, the youngest daughter of Sir John Puckering, Lord Keeper". Indeed, Sir John did not have a daughter, Jane. The 1909 British Museum "Catalogue of Manusctript Music" offered an alternate identification "...probably the Jane Puckering whose father, Sir Thomas, was created a baronet in 1612 and whose aunt Dorothy married Sir Adam Newton" But, Sir Thomas did not marry until 1616, so the daughter Jane who died without issue in 1652 cannot possibly have been the owner of the book in the same year as her parents' marriage. So, it remains a mystery, unless there is new research of late. All in all, records indicate Pickering, Pickeringe, and Puckering. Since her inscription is Pickeringe, I'd go with that. ed At 11:20 PM 6/20/2007 +0100, Stephen Kenyon wrote: >Hello, which please is the appropriate spelling for our Jane? >Many thanks... > >Stephen > > > > >To get on or off this list see list information at >http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html > > >-- >No virus found in this incoming message. >Checked by AVG Free Edition. >Version: 7.5.472 / Virus Database: 269.9.1/854 - Release Date: 6/19/2007 >1:12 PM Edward Martin 2817 East 2nd Street Duluth, Minnesota 55812 e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] voice: (218) 728-1202
