Dear Serpentistsss
I think I heard my first serpent knowingly (while also seeing it)
very recently in an orchestrated version of Purcell's Dido Aeneas,
(orchestrated by Philip Pickett with the help of Andrew Pinnock) here
in Paris. This serpent was making suitable grumblings to accompany
the witches.
Th'Infernal Trumpet tro' the Abiss profound
Horribly Rumbles with its dreary Sound
(see Gardiner's use of the serpent in Berlioz' Dies irae).

There was also a pair of interesting slide trumpets that accompanied,
"Bid the Warlike Trumpet sound" etc …

The Serpent was played by expert serpentist Philip Humphries, who
apparently put in a brief appearance in the BBC Pride & Prejudice
with Colin Firth and Jeniffer Ethie, directed by Simon Langton. It
seems that serpents do make brief appearances in a number of films
where they are usually seen, but strangely not heard … http://
