Of course, copyright really has nothing to do with guitar vs. lute. It's a matter of age. You can find reams of old public-domain guitar music scattered hither and yon across the web as well as performances on Youtube. Dowland on lute or de Murcia on guitar personally aren't necessarily more generous than the Rolling Stones, just much further past it and less able to sue.
