Sorry, my mail went to the wrong list (I think), so here's it again:

> of lutes being played _outside_ ... with ensembles?
> Where these guys essentially just playing "air lute"?

I played outside last weekend. In a harbour in front of boat, large crowds
walking past, and later on the boat going from Leiden to Delft, large crowds
gathering along the canal. I played my 'stuiterluitje', the expendable lute
strung in carbon (did I mention the dreaded C-word?) and Kuerschner
overspunn basses (is it true, do I call this a lute, still?). It's the lute
I never use in concert because it's of considerably less quality than my
'real' lutes. But the string choice was perfect for a day in the sun and the
wind, to which I didn't want to expose my concert instuments, let alone try
to keep these in tune under such circumstances. I could be heard by the
crowds, mainly strumming with single line melodies in between. No
complicated repertoire. Greensleeves was as complicated as I went. I was
standing up for maximum projection (and maximum visibility of my costume,
about which more on a later date ...).

I've played outside on other occasions too, on better lutes, and liked the
projection I could make. With a lute, we bring our own acoustics, I always
feel. A guitar is much harder to play effectively outside.

So, no air lute.
