Dear Craig,

If you've looked at/listened to David van Ooijen's exhaustive experiments, I
think it comes down to recording the noise in the room - in other words,
it's more to do with the end result on the recorder than with the origin of
the sound. For live performance, an SM57 will perform differently from an
SM58, but both will need to be close to the source to give enough response.
The distances David uses for the "best" results are too great for dynamic
mics not to need the volume bumping up later - at a distance condenser mics
are going to be far more polyvalent.

I work with a guy who teaches "Sound", and also does a lot of lucrative
recording work on the side (alongside full-time pros in TV/radio). Not only
was he bowled over by David's work (sorry David, I meant to pass on his
expression of respect), but when I pointed out that I was not in the Rode
league, he suggested a matched pair of Studio Projects C4 - on top of that
he loaned me his pair, which he uses on contract work. Unfortunately I've
only got one XLR-XLR cable, so I could only test it on mono, but put one
alongside A.N.Other mic. I was extemely impressed, particularly with the
omni capsule, and am now saving up.

All that aside, I could not recommend Studio Projects over Rode or any other
mic - the moral of the story is find someone who's prepared to let you have
a go and then go on what you hear - after all it's what you would do with
an instrument, isn't it? It's just not an easy to do the same with mics,
and at least to me the specs all look the same until I get to the bits I
don't understand.

Tony
