Dear David, His precise word was "passion" - which I took to mean the pains you took and are probably still taking to explore the possibilities available to you. I think he was impressed by the fact that your "tipof the iceberg" probably goes far beyond what he as a professional does himself (probably because in school he has to go straight for the most likely best set-ups because of timetable constraints, and in live recordings the best he can get for himself in the time/space available).
He didn't talk about the actual quality at all, but I don't think that is significant either way - I don't think that he as a non-musician would presume to comment on that - what interests him is the noticeable difference between the different tests rather than actually judging them. By the way, if Rode NT55s are "budget", then he's more than happy with a lower one apparently - the thing about the C4s was merely a way of getting me not to buy Behringers... When I get my mics, and if I manage a take with acceptable playing quality I'll do a bit of sharing too.
