Thanks for the link to the cittern.
The Caravaggio I'm talking about is (I think) a different one from the
two we already know, one of which is almost certainly not genuine - the
case was discussed by David Van Edwards some time ago.
Can anyone shed any further light? Any comments on the cittern? It
seems to be 11 strings, arranged 5x2 plus single top string, no sign of
a triple course anywhere. Is this the kind of instrument Kargel wrote for?

If you can get hold of today's Daily Telegraph (Tuesday 27th
November), you will see on p.30 a recently-discovered picture
of a 6c cittern painted by Antiveduto Grammatica. It was to
have featured in a show in New York, but it now seems that it
will appear (for sale) in the Robilant and Voena Gallery in
Dover Street, London.
Also in the putative New York show was "Apollo the lute
player"
by Caravaggio, but it seems this is not going to appear yet.
When it does, it will probably be under the auspices of Clovis
Whitfield of Old Bond Street.
