Hi Troy, I also highly recommend the Robert Lundberg book "Historical Lute Construction" which is available from the Guild of American Luthiers( http://www.luth.org/ ) but may be found at less cost on eBay or Amazon. The GAL is primarily a guitar builder's group barely earning the name "luthier" but they occasionally have something of interest to the early instrument maker.
Baroque guitar building is quite different from the skills and disciplines needed in lute building and the GAL might be of greater service in such an endeavor than for lutes. Best advice: Sharpen your tools and start cutting some wood.
