I agree it's about interpretation. For instance I have 4 versions of Holbornes ?17th Galliard by 4 different lutenists, 2 are played at the proper tempo and notationaly correct to the sheet music I have, one is played at pace and one by Chris Wilson where there are all manner of additional notes, flurries and trills thrown in and played like the man is in a rush to get somewhere. I can say the same about Dalza's 'Calata alla spagnola ditto terzetti, I have 2 versions one played at the correct tempo and one played at such a pace that you can't keep up with it, so whose right if you questioned them.
I often smirk when the 'Grand Masters' on the list go off on one, but the simple fact of the matter is we don't know, none of us were around in the 15-1600's so we can only go on what we see in old manuscripts or perhaps the odd critique of a performance written at the time, and lets face how many times have you been to a performance then read the reviews the day after only to think 'Was this person actually there' So really it's about being either a starched shirt or a Nigel Kennedy. Let's hope no one claims to play their 11c with their teeth ala Hendrix, the fall out would be terrible. Must dash to the bunker. However; in doing so they must also be willing to take the heat and ridicule, if a majority of listeners think they have perverted the composition, as well as the praise, from those who think what they did was genius. As for me, I am a bit of a purist. As to this performance; I seem to be able to download only the first 23 seconds of it so I cannot form too much of a critique.
