I have been using David van Ooijen's system for some time now and it works perfectly. I have bent and moved the frets to get the best measured result, not the best theoretical result. This was interesting because it shows that any scheme to place the frets MUST be altered to the instrument and strings. Using measurement microphones I tested the tuning using a strobe, and the result is as good as many keyboard temperaments.
Incidentally, you can get a similar effect on Non-split keyboards by tuning the enharmonics in different octaves: e.g., a G sharp above middle C; an A flat below middle C Or have them on different "8"s The photo below is a single fret system, however it is nice to have a C sharp and G sharp as well, on courses 4 & 5, keeping the A flat on the first course I used this recently with cornetto, organ and chitarrone, and was very happy with the sound. It also records very well. http://www.voicesofmusic.org/chitmt.html dt To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
