   Dear Arto and Fellow Lutenists:

I love the immeadiacy of live performances. I record directly
with one track, voice and guitar/Lute together. I also think it helps
to record in a great space, (a church or really large space) so there
is a little natural reverb. I have never recorded in front of an
audience but I think there can be great energy and interaction in the
performance because of it (however the rough background noises and even
applause can get in the way of a clean take). Also, with performances
is what the performer is bringing to the stage (what mood is he in
etc.) mindset can effect the recording/performance. Being in a really
good mood singing Laments isn't quite kosher, like being an actor,
one may step into or out of the role. I once heard a performance of
harpsichord that was exceedingly dry, technically very well done but
dry as if the performer was wriggling on the point of a pin. When
presenting ones work, it is very interesting the different feel you can
get from the piece (with rock and roll it is easier to landscape the
pieces, it doesn't matter as much) Like listening to the Rolling
Stones, playing the same song in different grooves (sometimes soft and
lilting and sometimes hard and punchy). I think with Lute and Guitar
music it is important to have a certain understanding of lilt, building
to crescendoes and weaving, like a dance, creating an edible song.

   Cheers!

   love,

   Rebecca
