I notice that players, used to synthetic top strings,
initially tend to strike the gut too hard, but good players rapidly
seems to adapt.
The main problem, I would think, is going from wirewounds to pure gut
basses. Martin Shepherd discusses this issue, here,

Judging from how quickly Miguel Serdoura adapted to my loaded gut
basses, I think there could be less of a problem with these
