Hi Kristen, I'm afraid it isn't that simple... I am left-handed so I know what I'm talking about. In fact a lute is not built like a guitar and it is not enough to change the strings the other way round to ba able to play a left-handed instrument. The barring under the sounboard is not symetric so if you change the strings you will not have a proper sound at all, plus the pegbox will not let you play easily around the first position as the top string peg will stand in the way, etc... So, unfortunately, I think the only really practical solution is to find a decent second-hand left-handed instrument or to commission a new one from a maker. Only then will you be happy with your lute and will not suffer from being left-handed, even if you are a new Jimi Hendrix on the lute ;-) !
Good luck and best wishes, Jean-Marie Poirier ======= 09-01-2009 06:22:57 ======= > > I"m interested in learning to play the lute. Can a 12 course lute be > restrung left handed?
