Thank you, Mathias. You're the only one who has given me what I requested: a straight numerical answer. Unfortunately, wrong question! ;-) Conclusion: it is easier on the lute list to get the answer to life, the universe and everything, than it is to obtain a simple string length. So it goes... Seriously, I do appreciate everyone's comments. The whole question of "when is a lute not a lute" or in this case, "when is a theorbo really a theorbo," is something I find incomprehensible.
