That us not true.
There are some recordings on which Gerwig is listed as using an ERZLAUTE,
and there are photos of him with what looks like a 12 or 13course lute.

Gerwig used a 10 course lute in ren tuning for everything he did. It was
made by a luthier called Hans Jordan from Markneukirchen Germany.
Bob Spencer and Michael Schaeffer also used lutes by him in their early
days. Daniel Benko also plays a modified lute by this maker.
They were rather heavy instruments but well made. In fact in the fifties
and early sixties they were the best lutes money could buy.

Did he make an effort to find the original tapes? That would of course
be the ideal.
I think a very worthwhile project. He was a wonderful player, and it's
worth noting
that these recordings were made with gut strings at least for the on
board strings.

Hello All,
A colleague at work (BBC Radio 3) is writing a doctoral thesis on
historical historical recordings, as it were - old recordings of early
music. He has an excellent collection of records, which he is in the
process of digitizing.
He's made some excellent transfers of a number of recordings which may
be of interest to us lutenists. They are out of copyright (at least,
they are here in the UK - I think the situation is different in the
USA, so do be careful that you are not breaking any local laws if you
choose to download them). The files are FLAC lossless audio - not
compressed in the way that mp3s are, but a completely faithful
reproduction of the sound from the vinyl. There are lots of shareware
players out there that can cope with FLAC files - Audacity, Winamp and
VLC being three...
Walter Gerwig was, in my opinion, a very fine player - despite the
dated technique he gets a nice sound from his instrument. Very
musical, if favouring speeds which to me seem a little on the slow
side, here he is well-recorded and my friend Nick has cleaned up and
de-clicked the transfers with a light touch.
